In was back in 1904 in Horfield, Bristol that Archibald Alexander Leach was brought into this world. Most people know him now as Cary Grant. His childhood was fairly normal for a middle class family in England but tragedy was to strike his home when he was only 9 as his mother fell gravely ill with a mental condition. When he turned 14, he left school and joined a comedic troupe which was led by Bob Pender after lying about how old he was and signing his father's signature.
While in this troupe he developed a number of useful entertainment skills which included acrobatics as well as pantomime. With the Pender comedy troupe, he got to see most of England but he felt as if his destiny laid in America. As luck would have it, he was selected as one of seven of the troupe's boys to go to Broadway to perform Good Times. This musical played for more then 450 performances.
In 1931 he left the Broadway scene and headed off to California to advance his career. Changing his name to Cary Grant, he managed to get a screen test with Paramount and was accepted. A year later he would debut in the movie entitled This is the Night and would immediately become a success.
It was Mae West who had to have Cary in her movies and before the next full year was up, he had been in the films 'She Done Him Wrong' as well as 'I'm No Angel'. It was not until 1935 though that Cary Grant would finally get the big break he was looking for when he was paired up with Katherine Hepburn in the movie 'Sylvia Scarlet't.
It seemed as if the dynamic duo of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn were a perfect match, because after his contract with Paramount expired in 1937, he chose to become an independent. This choice allowed him to choose the roles he wanted to play rather then being assigned to them, and as a result, with Hepburn at his side he was able to release some of the fines comedies of his career.
When Cary turned 62, he decided that it was time to retire from the filming industry and become both a father as well as a husband. While he may not have been the best when it comes to staying married, as is evident by the 5 different marriages, he did live a full life filled with many great memorable achievements. On November 29th of 1986, Cary Grant died of a stroke and left behind a legacy that still lives on today. - 17944
